5 natural hair-straightening methods

If you have wavy or curly hair, then you likely know the struggle of going straight. Depending on the thickness, it can take a very long time to straighten your locks with a flat iron, and after a while, your arms start to get tired!

Although you may like the totally straight feeling you’re left with when you use a flat iron, there are some consequences of using it too often:

The heat is very bad for your hair. It will leave your locks dry, frizzy, and full of split ends.

Your hair can begin to thin and weaken due to heat damage.

When you treat hair too often, your hair will start to loose the depth of its natural color and any natural shine it has.

Take a break from the flat iron for a while, and instead, try some natural methods of straightening that you may end up preferring, in the end. Take your pick from the following 5 methods:

#1. Fuller’s earth

Otherwise known as Multani Mitti, Fuller’s earth is a great natural way to straighten your hair with very little effort. All you need to do is mix the powder with a bit of water to create a paste. Lather the paste all throughout your hair, covering roots and scalp. Comb out your hair and leave paste for an hour, while you relax. When you wash it out, you’ll be amazed by what you see.

#2. Eggs and full fat milk

Whip together two eggs and a cup of milk. In a big enough bowl, dip and cover all your hair. Leave to soak for about 15 minutes. Remove the excess liquid from hair by squeezing tightly, make a bun, and cover hair. Leave sitting for an hour before washing out.

#3. Fresh lime juice and coconut milk

Mix juice from half a lime, a cup of coconut milk, a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and cornstarch well. Bring together over heat and allow to cool before covering your hair with it. Let sit for an hour before rinsing out.

#4. Aloe vera mix

Boil three tablespoons of flaxseeds, and cool down. Add two teaspoons of honey and castor oil, one tablespoon of lemon juice, with two tablespoons of fresh aloe vera gel, and mix well. Put this mix onto wet hair and let it dry. Then rinse it out with water and pat it dry.

#5. Honey and banana

Mix mashed banana with honey, olive oil, and yogurt. Rub through whole head of hair, and wrap your hair in a towel. Let it sit for one hour, then wash and allow to air dry.

Other tips to reduce waviness or curliness

Put hair into tight bun after washing and allow to dry. Make sure that the bun is near the nape of your neck.

Before going to bed, make a part in your hair as if going to do pigtails. Using small rubber bands, tie small areas of hair as close to scalp as possible. Leave them in overnight.

Spray hair with milk 30 minutes to an hour before each shower. After doing this a few times, you will start to see a reduction in waviness.

Use some of these techniques for straightening to give your hair a needed break from heat treatments. You may even find an alternative you want to stick with.
